Equipment List / Ozark Challenge will supply the following:
- Free parking, camping, and hot showers at Byrd's Adventure Center (no reservations necessary)
- Post-race meal for all racers and up to 2 spectators per team
- Race T-shirts for all racers
- Award ceremony with prizes and trophies for top 3 teams in each category
- All necessary maps, boats, paddles, and personal floatation devices (more info below)
Teams must supply the following:
- 4 coed adventure racers (18 or older)
- Vehicle (2 wheel-drive is fine; racers must pre-drop all biking equipment at a secure location TBA before event)
- Food, fluids, camping gear, and base transition equipment of your choice
Team Equipment (1 set per team):
- Compass (additional back-up compass recommended)
- Map tools (prepare to plot UTM coordinates on 7.5 Minute 1:24000 topographical maps)
- Whistle
- Small knife or multi-tool
- Lighter or waterproof matches
- Extra headlamp (or flashlight) with batteries
- At least 50 water purification tablets (alone or as back-up for other purification methods)
- Athletic or duct tape (10+ feet)
- Elastic bandage
- Blister kit
- At least 8 large Band-Aids
- At least 4 blood-absorbing pads (maxi-pads work well)
- At least 4 pairs of latex gloves (1 pair for solo racers)
- Optional: 1 cell phone for emergencies (Cingular recommended in course area)
- Optional: 1 Family Radio Service (FRS) radio for emergencies
Paddling Equipment (Boats, Paddles, and PFDs are provided):
- 1 set of appropriate river clothing and footwear per racer
Note: Prepare for cold water - don't wear cotton on the river! Wetsuits, booties, and splash wear can be rented at Byrd's Adventure Center: (479) 667-4066. Personal boats may not be used. Personal paddles (single or double-bladed) and Coast Guard approved Type III PFDs may be used if carried on a TBA section of the race.
Mountain Biking Equipment:
- 1 mountain bike per racer
- 1 certified bike helmet per racer
- 1 well-stocked bike and tire repair kit per team or solo racer
- 1 set of bike headlights and taillights per racer
- Food and supplies for bike section (all biking equipment will be pre-dropped at a secure location before event)
Personal Equipment (1 set per participant):
- Pack (plastic bags recommended to keep items in pack dry during race)
- Water bottles or hydration system (prepare to purify drinking water from streams during the race)
- Headlamp or flashlight (extra batteries and spare bulb recommended)
- Emergency strobe (if headlamp does not have strobe feature)
- Emergency space blanket or ultra-light bivy bag (bivy recommended)
- Rain pants and hooded long-sleeve fully water-proof rain jacket with taped or sealed seams
- Synthetic or wool base layer (long-sleeve top and long pants; no cotton)
- Thick long-sleeve synthetic fleece jacket
- Thick synthetic fleece hat
- High-quality outdoor footwear
